After a time of unplugging for a few days at a campground near Morro Bay, my family attended the Science March in San Jose last Saturday. It was just one of many sister marches happening around the country as a public act in defense of science as a valuable tool for healing, knowledge, technology, medicine and more. Some of my colleagues and friends were there too and it was a glorious celebration!
It was a bit wild too because also happening that day was the Silicon Valley Comic Con, which invited nearly 100,000 people downtown over the weekend, many in incredibly detailed costumes. The festival was marketed as the place where technology and pop culture meet, but there were meetings of all kinds that day.
In the Christian tradition, it is Eastertide, which means we are still intentionally looking for signs of rising. I see it in so many ways and I give thanks for more spaces where we can celebrate meeting and coming together around reasons to rise up.
A community that is rising claims new chances to stand up for what we believe in, and to celebrate what we all value. There is also something joyful about being a part of shared experiences that build up the common good. This weekend was a funky group of thousands in a park, where art and laughter and poetry and dreaming and defending were allowed in full color. I am grateful!
Keep rising wherever you are!
